Vietnam Factbook › 교통 › Cat Ba ferries and the Hai Phong crossing
Ageing. Last checked 51 days ago. Still broadly right, but confirm anything you are relying on.
Cat Ba Island sits in Ha Long Bay and is reached by water from the mainland port city of Hai Phong. Several ferry routes and a cable car connect the island to the shore, and combination bus-and-boat tickets link it to Hanoi.

The ferry crossings between Hai Phong and Cat Ba Island are the main gateway to the island, operating on a handful of distinct routes with different vessel types, journey times and embarkation points. A cable car provides an additional crossing option. Understanding which route suits a given itinerary — and whether a written visa is required for the ferry — requires checking current operator information, as schedules and ticketing arrangements change.

Typical journey times

JourneyTypical time How oftenNotes
Ferry Got (Hai Phong) → Cai Vieng (Cat Ba) 20 – 30 min Frequent through the day Car ferry across the channel; the road legs either side are what take the time.
Ferry Ben Binh (Hai Phong) → Cat Ba town 45 – 60 min Several daily Passenger speedboat straight to the town.
Bus Hanoi → Cat Ba town 3h 30m – 4h 30m Several daily Combined bus and boat ticket, door to door.
Ferry Tuan Chau (Ha Long) → Gia Luan (Cat Ba) 45 – 60 min Seasonal, reduced in winter Crosses the bay rather than the channel.

Typical door-to-door ranges, not a timetable. Road times move with traffic and weather, and sea crossings are cancelled outright in rough conditions — confirm with the operator on the day. Last reviewed: 2026-09-10.

The main ferry routes

Two principal crossing corridors serve Cat Ba Island from the Hai Phong side. The Got–Cai Vieng route departs from the Got ferry terminal on the outskirts of Hai Phong and arrives at Cai Vieng on the northern tip of Cat Ba Island. This crossing passes through a landscape of karst limestone islands and is the shorter sea passage. The Ben Binh–Cat Ba route links the Ben Binh terminal, closer to central Hai Phong, directly to Cat Ba town harbour. Ben Binh is more convenient for travellers already in the city centre. Both routes carry foot passengers; vehicle capacity varies by vessel and should be confirmed with the operator before travel.

Hydrofoil service

A hydrofoil service has historically operated between Hai Phong and Cat Ba, offering a faster crossing than the standard ro-ro or passenger ferries. The hydrofoil carries foot passengers only — no motorbikes or cars — and the crossing time is considerably shorter than on conventional vessels. Schedules are reduced outside peak season and the service can be suspended in poor weather or rough sea conditions. Departures are timed around the morning and early-afternoon windows; late-day options are limited. Fares differ from those on the standard ferry and there is a separate ticketing arrangement.

Bus-ferry combination tickets from Hanoi

A widely used option for travellers coming from Hanoi is the combination ticket that bundles a bus leg, a ferry crossing and onward transport to Cat Ba town into a single purchase. The bus departs from a central Hanoi pickup point, transfers passengers to a ferry terminal on the Hai Phong side, and a connecting minibus or local vehicle completes the journey from the Cat Ba ferry landing to town. The exact routing — which terminal, which crossing — can vary between operators and seasons, so the Got–Cai Vieng corridor or the Ben Binh route may be used. The total journey from Hanoi to Cat Ba town typically takes several hours. These combination tickets are sold through travel agencies and hostels in Hanoi's Old Quarter and online; the fare depends on the operator and season.

The cable car

A cable car also crosses to Cat Ba Island, linking a mainland terminal with a station on the island. It represents an alternative to the water crossings rather than a supplement to them for most travellers, and the approach roads and transfer logistics differ from those of the ferry terminals. Whether the cable car accepts bicycles or motorbikes, and what its operating hours and ticketing conditions are, should be confirmed directly with the operator, as these details are subject to change. The existence of a written visa requirement for this crossing is a question that is currently unsettled — travellers should verify the current entry formalities before relying on this route.

Taking a motorbike

Bringing a motorbike across to Cat Ba Island is possible on the vehicle-capable ferry routes, though not on the hydrofoil. A separate vehicle fare applies in addition to the passenger fare. Space on car and motorbike decks is limited and allocated on a first-come basis; during busy periods the vessel may be full before all waiting vehicles have boarded. Riders should arrive with time to spare and should not assume that a passenger ticket guarantees space for a vehicle. Whether a motorbike may be taken via the cable car crossing is an unsettled question at time of writing.

Summer weekends and queues

Cat Ba Island is a popular domestic and international destination, and demand on the ferries peaks sharply on summer weekends — roughly from late May through August — and around Vietnamese public holidays. Queues at both the Got and Ben Binh terminals can be long, and travellers arriving without advance tickets or early in the queue have at times waited for multiple sailings before boarding. The return journey on Sunday afternoons and the end of holiday periods is particularly congested. Travelling on weekdays, or outside the June–August window, noticeably reduces the likelihood of delays. Those on tight itineraries should build contingency time around ferry crossings during peak periods.

Practical notes

The ferry terminals at Got and Ben Binh are not adjacent to each other or to central Hai Phong; reaching the correct terminal requires local transport and should be factored into journey planning. Luggage can be taken aboard passenger ferries without restriction in practice, though very bulky items may attract handling complications on busy sailings. Tickets for standard ferries are generally purchased at the terminal on the day, though combination bus-ferry tickets bought in advance fix the departure window. Schedules, fares and operators are not reproduced here as they change; the port authority or a local travel agent in Hai Phong or Hanoi is the reliable source for current timetables.
