Phu Quoc ferriesPhà Phú Quốc
Two mainland ports serve Phu Quoc by sea: Rach Gia, the larger port to the south, and Ha Tien, the smaller town closer to the Cambodian border to the north. Both are in Kien Giang province. The principal operator is Superdong, though other companies also run scheduled services. The crossing is the main alternative to flying for travellers arriving overland from the Mekong Delta.
The two routes compared
The Ha Tien – Phu Quoc route is the shorter crossing. Ha Tien sits roughly 45 kilometres from the island as the crow flies, and the sailing time on a fast boat is considerably less than the journey from Rach Gia. For travellers coming from An Giang or other parts of the Mekong Delta, however, Rach Gia is the more logical departure point: it is a larger transit hub with more frequent departures and onward transport connections. The Rach Gia crossing takes longer but is better served across the day. Which port makes sense depends largely on where a traveller is coming from and how flexible their schedule is.
Fast boats and car ferries
Services on both routes divide into fast passenger boats (high-speed catamarans) and slower car ferries capable of carrying vehicles. Fast boats are the dominant choice for foot passengers: they are significantly quicker and run more frequently. Car ferries take longer but are the only option for those travelling with a car or larger vehicle. Conditions on open-deck fast boats can be rough even in good weather; the vessels are enclosed, but sea spray and motion are factors on choppy days. Passengers prone to seasickness are advised to prepare accordingly. Whether a written booking confirmation is required to board is a question that is not fully settled and may vary by operator and season — checking directly with the operator before travel is the reliable approach.
Taking a motorbike across
It is possible to transport a motorbike to Phu Quoc by ferry, though the process differs from a standard passenger booking. Motorbikes are carried on the car ferry rather than the fast boats. There is a separate fare for the vehicle in addition to the passenger fare. At busy periods — particularly around Vietnamese public holidays — space for motorbikes can fill quickly, and early arrival at the port is advisable. Riders should confirm with the specific operator what documentation is required for the bike, as requirements can vary.
Sea conditions and cancellations
The southwest monsoon, which runs roughly from June to September, brings the roughest seas in the Gulf of Thailand. During this period, departures on both routes are subject to cancellation or postponement at short notice when conditions exceed safe operating thresholds. Cancellations can affect multiple consecutive days during a heavy swell. This is not a minor inconvenience: travellers with fixed onward flights or tight schedules should treat monsoon-season ferry travel to and from Phu Quoc as genuinely uncertain, and consider whether flying is a more reliable option for their dates. Outside the monsoon, cancellations are relatively rare but not impossible.
Booking
Tickets can be bought at the port on the day, but this carries risk during peak travel periods — the days around Tết and other Vietnamese public holidays see high demand, and sailings can sell out. Advance booking through operator offices or authorised agents reduces that risk. Superdong operates its own ticketing, and third-party booking platforms also sell seats on these routes. As with all ferry services in Vietnam, timetables and operators can change; the current schedule is best confirmed directly with the operator or at the port. There is a fare for the crossing, the amount of which varies by route, vessel type, class of seat, and season.
