When flying beats the train or bus

Vietnam's railway runs the length of the country but is slow; the Reunification Express between Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City takes roughly 30 to 35 hours depending on the service. For that corridor, flying is almost always faster in total journey time even accounting for airport procedures. The same logic applies to Hanoi–Da Nang and Ho Chi Minh City–Da Nang, where the train takes eight hours or more.

The calculus shifts on shorter or more northerly segments. Hanoi to Lao Cai, for instance, is served by overnight sleeper trains to a railhead near Sapa, and many travellers find the train more convenient than flying to a regional airport and arranging onward ground transport. Buses remain competitive on some shorter routes where no airport exists at the destination.

Flight frequency is also a factor: on thin routes, a single daily flight means a missed connection or cancellation causes a full day's delay, whereas trains and buses run more spread-out schedules.

Baggage rules that catch travellers out

On full-service fares with Vietnam Airlines, a checked baggage allowance is typically included, though the exact weight tier depends on the fare class purchased. Carry-on allowances have weight limits that are enforced at the gate.

On budget carriers, particularly VietJet, the base fare includes only a small carry-on allowance. Checked baggage must be purchased in advance; buying it at the airport — or adding it after check-in opens — costs considerably more than purchasing it at the time of booking. This is one of the most common sources of unexpected expense for travellers who are used to a bundled model.

The Tet (Lunar New Year) period, the April–May holiday cluster and the summer school-holiday period (June to August) see high demand; booking late for these windows is a significant risk regardless of which carrier is preferred.

Check-in deadlines are enforced firmly on domestic routes; the window before departure by which gates close tends to be shorter than on international flights but is non-negotiable.
